This stand-alone e-Learning module in Quality and Safety is appropriate for all healthcare professionals, working in any related clinical area. It will provide the student with an understanding of the Quality Agenda both within the United Kingdom and globally.
The aim of the module is to allow healthcare professionals to develop their knowledge to an advanced level in Quality and Safety. The module content includes:
- Learning from error
- Human factors
- The model for improvement
The Francis Report (2013) revealed failures in the quality and safety of the healthcare provision in one English NHS organisation. The report recommendations will have a far-reaching impact on all healthcare organisations where the focus on quality and safety will be paramount.
Cardiff University, one of the Russell Group Universities, now offers a part-time e-Learning, Level 7 module, which is suitable for all healthcare professionals, working in any aspect of healthcare.
The Quality and Safety module, is a 12 week stand alone (20 credits), Masters level (level 7), e-Learning module. It aims to provide the student with the opportunity to learn and develop an understanding of quality and safety issues within their clinical practice. It will allow students to reflect on current issues and facilitate a greater understanding of how these impact on health care and to synthesise this to clinical practice in order to identify best practice.
The emphasis is on:
- Human Factors
- Error management
- Tools for improvement
- Understanding data for improvement
This is an e-Learning module with an integrated method of teaching and a range of different media to present key knowledge. The nature of eLearning means that the module can be studied and completed at the students’ pace and allows flexibility to fit in with working in clinical practice. Students will access the modules through the medium of Learning Central, which is Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment (or VLE). This delivers the course materials/content. This is accessible via all forms of computer (desktop / laptop / tablet) smart phones and iPads, via a dedicated Learning Central application (downloadable from the Apple App. Store).
The module starts with a 2 week introductory period to enable to the student to familiarise themselves with the module and e-Learning. The main module, runs over 10 weeks.
The course team offer support Mon – Friday (9-5) by email, telephone and online discussion boards/forums. The method of assessment is a written assessment. There are no residential components or written examinations to attend so there would be no need for you to travel to Cardiff University for course purposes.
The student will develop their ability to study at level 7, understand the research process and how to critically evaluate, synthesise and reflect on research and research findings, in relation to practice. They will be encouraged to challenge ideas. The emphasis is on the quality and safety within clinical practice.
While this is the first year the module has been delivered as a stand-alone course, it has been delivered as part of the Critical Care MSc. The following testimonials on this module are from Critical Care MSc students.

- Be a qualified healthcare professional or be working in a healthcare setting;
- AND hold a UK higher education qualification from a UK institution with relevant degree awarding powers as detailed by the Department of Education and Skills;
- OR Be able to demonstrate equivalent skills that are sufficient to meet the demands of the module of study in question and be approved as such by the Head of School or his/her nominee.
- Entry is open to EU and non EU applicants who satisfy the above or hold a non-UK qualification equivalent to CQFW credit level 6 or above as defined and detailed by the National Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (NARIC);
- OR who are able to demonstrate equivalent skills that are sufficient to meet the demands of the module of study in question and be approved as such by the Head of School or his/her nominee;
- AND satisfy any applicable University language competency requirements as detailed in the Cardiff University Senate Regulations (available via the Cardiff University website).
Please note: All students enrolling for the module must be in relevant paid employment. The student has to be working in a clinical area that is relevant to module they are undertaking, throughout the module.
Students should also ensure that as the module is offered as an e-Learning course, the student will need to have a reliable Broadband connection (1mb or higher) to access the module materials.
The module runs in March each year. The next module will start on the 7th March 2016.

Fees quoted are for the academic session 2016/17. For programmes lasting more than one year, tuition fees for subsequent years of study are subject to an increase of no more than 4.5% per year.
