Chemistry (BSc)

Chemistry is a fundamental and exciting discipline, and one that plays a significant role in many areas of science and in everyday life. This importance is reflected in the ethos of the Cardiff School of Chemistry which is internationally recognised as a dynamic and innovative centre for teaching and research.

All our degrees degrees are designed to give you a broad Chemistry education and, in addition, supply you with a wide range of research, mathematical and computational skills. All major areas of the subject are covered in the BSc Chemistry course, with practical training an essential element. The skills developed during this degree programme provide an excellent basis for further study, research or employment. All programmes offered by the school have been "approved" (BSc) or "accredited" (MChem) by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The course structure is very flexible with all Cardiff's Chemistry degree programmes share a common first and second year. The range of modules available in the first year is designed to stimulate your interest in Chemistry whilst giving you a sound foundation upon which to build in later years. The programme in the first year includes a core of chemistry modules including: Molecular Structure and reactivity; Metals in Solids and Solutions; Synthetic Chemistry; Spectroscopy and Kinetics. These are complimented by a range of optional modules, which are reviewed and updated regularly. Current examples include: Forensic Chemistry; Chemistry of the Cosmos; Chemical Biology. Students may also take optional modules in other disciplines, such as Biological Sciences, Physics or Modern Languages. In the second year you will take more advanced modules that allow you to practise and consolidate new skills by applying them to a wide range of problems. These include: Coordination Chemistry; Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy; and Organic Mechanisms and Synthesis.

At the end of the second year, you can decide whether you want to continue with your original degree choice or choose another of Cardiff's Chemistry degrees, subject to performance. 

The sound basis provided over years 1 and 2 is consolidated in the final year with core modules such as Organometallics, Organic Synthesis and Biopolymers, Structure Determination, and optional modules that reflect the research strengths of the School, such as Catalysis and Electrocatalysis, Medicinal and Enzyme Chemistry, and Soft Solids. A substantial research project is also undertaken in the final year.

ABB - BBB (320-300 points) with a Grade B in Chemistry.

Entry Requirements

Chemistry and two other science or mathematical subjects. Whilst a third A level is preferred, two excellent AS subjects may be considered in lieu of a third A level. General Studies is not accepted.

Alternative Entry Requirements

Applications from those offering alternative/vocational/overseas qualifications (eg Access, Vocational A-level) are welcome as are those who may have combinations of qualifications or other relevant work/life experience.
