Neuroscience is the study of nervous systems and their component nerve cells. The human brain contains one hundred thousand million such cells! How it works remains one of the most alluring and baffling of all questions on the frontiers of understanding. Can the brain understand the brain' Can it understand the mind' Is the brain a giant computer or something more' This course will show you ways in which we can attempt to answer these questions, using approaches that range from the biochemistry and biophysics of the nerve cell to a psychologist's investigation of the machinery of the mind.
In your first year you will follow the School's common first year Biomedical Science programme. This provides you with a broad scientific base centred on biochemistry, biomolecular science and human biology that will give you a firm foundation for your subsequent years of study. The common first year also has the advantage of giving you flexibility of degree choice. At the end of the first year you will have a free choice of whether to continue with your original degree choice or change to one of the other programmes which is served by the same common first year programme.
In your second year you will take modules such as membrane biophysics, anatomy of the human brain, pharmacology, cellular signalling and neuro-endocrinology. In the final year you will take modules including molecular biology in neuroscience, neuronal development and plasticity and transmission and neural network theory. You will also study a module containing four optional topics chosen from a range of at least 15 taught by research leaders.
Students taking the four year sandwich programme spend their third year on placement in a research institute, hospital, in the pharmaceutical industry gaining first hand experience of neuroscience research. We have links with partner institutions in the

Entry Requirements
Three subjects at A-Level. At least two sciences preferably Chemistry and Biology; must have at least an AS in Chemistry. Two AS subjects may be accepted in lieu of a third GCE A-Level.
Alternative Entry Requirements
Applications from those offering alternative/overseas qualifications (eg Access) are welcome as are those who may have combinations of qualifications or other relevant work/life experience.
