Prospective Students

Law and Welsh (LLB)

UCAS Code:

  • MQ15 LLB/LW

3 years (Full-time) / n/a (Part-time) / n/a (Distance / E-Learning)

The aim of the Law and Welsh degree programme is to produce lawyers who are not only skilled in the law of England and Wales but also fluent in the Welsh language and conversant with the social, political and cultural aspects of both countries.

In the first year you take four modules in Law and two modules in Welsh. In the second year at least half the modules studied will either be on Welsh topics or have a Welsh focus. They include Cymraeg Cyfoes. Your second year Law modules include two of the ‘foundation’ subjects required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board for exemption from the academic stage of the professional examinations. In addition, you select modules from the wide range of options offered by the School of Welsh.  In the final year the module Cymraeg y Gweithle is compulsory as are a dissertation in Welsh on a legal topic and the remaining two Law ‘foundation’ subjects.

The Law and Welsh degree meets the requirements of the governing bodies of the solicitors’ and barristers’ branches of the legal profession so that LLB graduates may obtain exemption from the academic stage of the professional examinations. Cardiff Law School also offers the Legal Practice Course and Bar Professional Training Course for students who wish to qualify as barristers or solicitors, so you will not need to go elsewhere to complete your legal education.
