This page contains information on all the different policies and requirements which govern applications for the course leading to the BSc in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene. The BSc qualifies students to practice as hygienists and therapists in practice and hospital settings and is recognised by the GDC. This is a classified Honours degree awarded by Cardiff University and is subject to university regulations.
All applicants are expected to have a good understanding of the remit of the dental therapist and dental hygienist.
Academic entry requirements
All applicants must have a minimum of five GCSEs (or their equivalent).
Including:
- English or Welsh Language at grade B or above
- Four other GCSEs in any subjects at grade C or above (excluding General Studies)
All applicants must also have one of the following:
- Either three A-Levels at grade B or above. One of which must include a biological based subject (Biology, Human Biology, Human Physiology and Health) and excludes General Studies OR
- A nationally recognised dental nursing qualification at Level 3 together with two A-levels at grade B or above to include at least one Biological based subject.
Equivalent Qualifications
Applicants with equivalent qualifications will be considered (e.g. Access courses, GNVQ, BTEC, IB etc). Applicants with such qualifications are invited to contact the Admissions Office: email dentaladmissions@cardiff.ac.uk
Non-Academic entry requirements
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age by 31st December after entry. No upper age limit is in force and applications are welcomed from mature students who meet the academic entry requirements as described. The applicant must show evidence of recent study.
Applicants will be required to complete a Criminal Records Disclosure Form and information will be sent to firm applicants in April. Information on this process is available from the Criminal Records Bureau http://www.crb.homeoffice.gov.uk/
