This exciting degree programme, offered as a 3-year or 4-year (sandwich) option, has been specifically designed to provide a broad knowledge of the molecular aspects of biology to meet with the ever-increasing applications of this rapidly expanding subject area. The broad outlook of this programme will ensure that you will be able to use your degree in a diverse set of career opportunities and, as such, this degree is a good choice for students with a general interest in the molecular basis of living systems.

In your first year you will follow the School's common first year Biological Sciences programme. This gives you a firm foundation in all the biological disciplines, and essential related disciplines that will give you a firm foundation for your subsequent years of study. The common first year also has the advantage of giving you flexibility of degree choice. At the end of the first year you will have a free choice of whether to continue with your original degree choice or change to one of the other programmes which is served by the same common first year programme.

In your second year you will take modules that combine the molecular aspects of biochemistry, genetics and biotechnology to maintain a broad knowledge basis. These modules will include Gene Function, Genome Organisation and Analysis, Cytogenetics, Medical Genetics and Protein Function, as well as practical aspects of Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry. Optional modules including Cell Signalling, Virology, Evolution and Medical Microbiology will be offered to allow you to follow your specific areas of interest.

In your final year there will be a strong emphasis on independent learning and you will investigate areas of current importance in cell and molecular biology though group discussions and presentation of research material. Your practical and analytical skills will be greatly developed through your research project. Tutorials and research seminars on wider aspects of the subject, including medical and industrial applications, will extend the scope of your learning programme.

Modules offered to you in final year will represent the interface between Biochemistry, Genetics, Medicine and Biotechnology and will allow you to pursue your own interests and aspirations. Topics will include Molecular Biology of Disease, Tissue Engineering, Advanced Molecular Biology, Transgenic Engineering, Advanced Biotechnology, Molecular and Cellular Immunology, Developmental Biology, Genome Organisation, Evolution and Bacterial Genetics.

Students taking the four year sandwich programme spend their third year away from the University on a placement which is arranged with the help of the School.

Three subjects including two science subjects. Must include Chemistry A-level. Two AS subjects will be accepted in lieu of a third A level.

Applications from those offering alternative/overseas qualifications (eg Access) are welcome as are those who may have combinations of qualifications or other relevant work/life experience.
