The Snowdon Award Scheme for Students with Physical Disabilities.
Reference Number: R204
Key Award Information
The Snowdon Award Scheme is a charity that provides grants to students with physical disabilities, to help them complete further or higher education or training.
The scheme aims to provide funds that help cover the additional costs of being disabled and a student in further and higher education, or a person in training. The Award Scheme will not therefore usually meet expenses that have to be borne by all students, such as tuition fees or standard living and accommodation costs.
Funding
Within the stated limits, the Award Scheme accepts applications for financial assistance towards the following costs, where they cannot be met in full from statutory sources:
Human help such as sign language interpreters or people to take notes
-
Computer equipment
-
Adapted or additional accommodation
-
Travel costs
-
Mobility equipment
-
Other costs which relate solely to disability
The Award Scheme will assist with tuition fees only where applicants are not eligible for statutory funding, and they provide justification that the need for assistance with tuition fees is related to their disability.
A grant will be for a period of one or two years and will not usually exceed the value of £2,000 per year. In exceptional cases, £2,500 may be awarded.
In the case of two-year grants, the continuation of the grant for the second year will be subject to a satisfactory academic or other appropriate report.
Eligibility
Residency: Students of all nationalities may apply but must be studying at a college or university in the UK.
Candidates will have a physical disability and be at least 17 years old at the beginning of the period of education or training for which they seek funding. Applicants will preferably be under 25, however, older applicants are always considered where funds permit.
How to Apply
To apply for a grant please fill in the online application form (see below).
You will also be asked to supply the following five detailed references. These can be emailed or posted to us in order to complete your application form. If they are unavailable at the time of application, you should tell us when they are likely to arrive.
- A medical reference from your GP or consultant
- A personal reference from someone who has known you at least three years and is not related to you
- An academic reference from a tutor at your previous or current place of study
- Official confirmation of the study place for which you are applying
- Evidence of your requested costs from suppliers — of the equipment or human help etc.
The awarding selection panel usually meets in July and October, with applicants receiving results soon after each meeting. Acceptance of an award must normally be made within two weeks of a funding offer.
Conditional awards may be made dependent on the results of examinations and other grant applications.
