Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship in chemical biology under the supervision of Dr Louis Luk in the School of Chemistry at Cardiff University. The studentship is open to applications from all nationalities.

Project title: Manufacturing Novel Artificial Enzymes

Dr Louis Luk has recently been appointed as a University Research Fellow at the University of Cardiff and is seeking a highly motivated recent graduate to join his research group as he establishes a diverse program, exploring new frontiers in synthetic biology.

We primarily focus on developing a novel approach to generate multifunctional artificial enzymes with organocatalytic activities. The PhD student will develop novel artificial cofactors suitable to catalyse a wide variety of useful chemical reactions. This project is highly multidisciplinary, drawing on tools from organic chemistry, chemical biology, molecular biology and organic chemistry. The PhD student will be able to enjoy learning techniques of organic synthesis, molecular cloning, gene expression, protein purification, chemical synthesis, and the use of various analytical instruments for biophysical characterisation, all of which are routinely used in both academic and industrial laboratories.

Please note that this studentship only covers the UK/EU tuition fees.

Funding

This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year).

Eligibility

Residency: This studentship is open to students of any nationality. Students classified as international for fee purposes have to self-fund the difference between home and international fees.

Academic criteria: Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a minimum of an upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or European equivalent and a Masters in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related discipline.

The successful candidate will also have a strong background in biochemistry and organic chemistry. First-hand experience in a relevant area of chemistry such as enzymology and synthetic chemistry is highly desirable.

A highly motivated and dedicated student will gain a thorough training in synthetic biology and be rewarded with a highly stimulating project that will shape the future of this exciting new research program.
