Key Studentship Information
Applications are sought for one studentship in the overall field of catalysis which is essential to the UK’s chemical industrial sector. Applications are welcomed from suitably qualified students with interests in any aspect of catalysis including heterogeneous, homogeneous and bio catalysis. The projects will be carried out in the Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI), which provides high-quality facilities for catalysis research. The CCI was established in 2008, with significant financial support from Cardiff University.
These projects are being established with the aim of forming new links with industrial partners and fostering new and challenging research areas. The research can also be targeted at establishing high level research collaboration with leading international academic research groupings. In all cases the research to be initiated will be of the highest quality and will therefore be at the fundamental cutting edge of science, while being highly relevant to industry. The chemicals sector is an immensely successful and important part of the world economy. In many countries it is recognised that there is a need to move to an innovation-driven economy in order to maintain this economic position. This is where academic research can play a key role in driving new innovation through ground breaking fundamental research. The successful design and implementation of catalysts has been at the heart of the chemical processes operated so successfully within industry, and innovation in catalysis is core to meeting many of the key questions facing society as a whole today. The successful design of catalysts for the fields of interest requires an integrated scientific approach to ensure commercial success. In turn, this requires cohesion of expertise in both theoretical and experimental aspects of catalysis embracing heterogeneous as well homogeneous catalysis, biocatalysis, surface science and nanoscience. The CCI academic staff currently has this wide range of expertise and applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates in any branch of catalysis.
The President’s Research Scholarship students will participate in research activities which will span all areas of catalysis including heterogeneous, homogeneous and bio catalysis and will interface with other research activities within chemistry through chemic synthesis to computational methodologies. There will be synergies with other subject areas within the University and the Institute is seeking to establish new collaborations with the Schools of Biosciences, Engineering, Pharmacy and Physics.
Doctoral students will be trained in the newly refurbished laboratory facilities of the CCI which include extensive and world leading research equipment and facilities.
The studentships will aim to prepare the doctoral students in a broad area of careers including academic and industry. The academic staff of the CCI has an impressive record of training students that have risen to high ranks within both academic and industry worldwide. These postgraduates are eagerly sought after for employment following their studies.
About President's Research Scholarships
These are Cardiff University President's Research Scholarships, part of a £4M investment to coincide with the inauguration of Professor Sir Martin Evans (Nobel Prize for Medicine 2007) as Cardiff’s President. All of the University Schools and Research Centres offering opportunities under the programme have demonstrated the real potential of the Scholarships to contribute to research excellence through significant, challenging and original PhD research projects and excellent PhD supervision and support.Other attractive features of the Scholarships include the presence of multiple President’s Scholars in each of the research areas and the guaranteed exposure of President’s Scholars to innovative technologies, theories, methodological approaches, and debates.
