Course Description
The MA/Diploma in Applied Linguistics is a full time programme with modules taught over two semesters (leading to the PG Diploma or Stage 1 of the MA), followed by a supervised dissertation of between 14,000 and 20,000 words between May and September (for Stage 2 of the MA). Assessment of the taught component is by coursework only. The part-time modular programme involves following the same modules over two years and four months.
In addition to the three compulsory modules of Research Foundations, Language Description and Phonology, students select three modules from the list below (modules may vary slightly year-on-year, according to staff availability, etc):
- Issues in Applied Linguistics
- Discourse and Social Interaction
- Forensic Linguistics
- Multimodality
- Qualitative Research Methods
- Quantitative Research Methods
- Text and Social Context
- Language and Lifespan Identity

Entry Requirements
First or upper Second class UK Honours degree, or equivalent.
Suitable for graduates in language-related disciplines, or with relevant language-related experience, including language teaching.
Applicants whose first language is not English are normally expected to have a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 overall.
