Biomedical Science is the biological science that underpins medicine and medical research. It may include many biological subjects such as human physiology, human structure, pharmacology, neuroscience, biochemistry, genetics and microbiology. It suits those who are interested in biomedical science but are not yet ready to specialise in one particular field.
The course covers a broad area (in particular human physiology, human structure, pharmacology and neuroscience) with the option to maintain either a broad approach to the degree or to specialise in one of these areas. You can even decide to switch to one of the more specialised degree programmes at the end of Year 1.
Preliminary Year
The Preliminary year programme is not normally a route fo students who have failed to achieve the requires grades at A-level. Successful completion of the Preliminary Year will result in the student automatically proceeding to the first year of the degree.
In your first year you will follow the School's common first year Biomedical Science programme. This provides you with a broad scientific base centred on biochemistry, biomolecular science and human biology that will give you a firm foundation for your subsequent years of study. The common first year also has the advantage of giving you flexibility of degree choice. At the end of the first year you will have a free choice of whether to continue with your original degree choice or change to one of the other programmes which is served by the same common first year programme.
In your second and final years you will study subjects in more depth and at an advanced level with greater emphasis on independent learning. The teaching will become more research-led and you will carry out your own research project under the personal supervision of a research scientist.
The element of choice present throughout the degree allows you study topics that particularly interest you or that relate to the career you wish to pursue. Whatever choices you make, the knowledge and skills that you will develop will make you employable in a broad range of careers within biomedical science.
Students taking the four year sandwich programme spend a year on placement, typically in an industrial laboratory or similar environment which is arranged with the help of the School.
