Anatomy is unique among the biological sciences; it encompasses the study of all levels of human structural organisation from the sub-cellular to the population.

Classically, anatomical study has proceeded by observation and dissection, supported by histology and embryology. Recent advances in cell and tissue biology, and in developmental biology, have resulted in much greater understanding of the formation and functioning of the body at gross, cellular and molecular levels and have had great impact on anatomical study.

At Cardiff the traditional approaches are combined with these recent developments to provide you with a stimulating and thoroughly up-to-date degree programme.

In your first year you will follow the School's common first year Biomedical Science programme. This provides you with a broad scientific base centred on biochemistry, biomolecular science and human biology that will give you a firm foundation for your subsequent years of study. The common first year also has the advantage of giving you flexibility of degree choice. At the end of the first year you will have a free choice of whether to continue with your original degree choice or change to one of the other programmes which is served by the same common first year programme

In your second year you will study exclusively anatomy. Your major topics will be: human topographical anatomy, including dissections of selected regions of the human body; human neuro-anatomy; anatomy of exercise; and developmental/cell biology. In addition you will carry out a library-based project on a topic of your choice.

Your final year modules will be taken jointly with medical and dental students who are intercalating a BSc in Human Anatomy. The modules will be based around seminars on connective tissue biology, developmental biology and neuroscience, with additional topics that include research techniques. An original research project will form an integral part of your final year studies.

Students taking the four year sandwich programme spend their third year away from the University on a placement which is arranged with the help of the School.

"After graduating with a first class honours degree in neuroscience at Cardiff. I have been working towards my PhD in the School of Biosciences studying the effects of neural transplantation in models of Parkinson's Disease. I am due to finish my Doctorate within the next few months before moving on to study medicine. I believe that what I have learned from the neuroscience course and the research skills I have acquired over the past two years will greatly enhance my future career as a medic."
