Prospective Students

English Language (BA)

UCAS Code:

  • Q313 BA/ELS
  • Q319 BA (part-time)

3 years (Full-time) / Options available please contact the Admissions Tutor. (Part-time) / n/a (Distance / E-Learning)

This programme is primarily intended for students with a professional interest in the English Language. It is designed in such a way as to promote awareness and understanding of the English language and its uses in various everyday communication contexts (including literature) and to develop an understanding of the principles of applied linguistics which underlie sound practical skills in relation to the professional use of the English language.

The programme shares common ground with our two other degrees in Year One where all first year students take modules in language and communication.  This degree scheme then focuses on a description of English language including its grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, together with a range of relevant studies in discourse, sociolinguistics, the media and gender. These do not assume any previous knowledge of linguistics or linguistic terminology. The modules examine how languages are organised, how they vary and change and how we exchange meanings on an everyday basis. In addition to these two first-year subjects students also choose a third subject which can either be from within the School or from another Humanities School.

In the second and third years the programme focuses on a description of English language, including its grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, together with a range of relevant studies in discourse, sociolinguistics, the media and gender. The programme includes the development of language skills in relation to career opportunities such as teaching, language and speech therapy, business, public relations, language research and language in computing.

For more information about part-time study and applying for part-time degrees please contact the admissions tutor.

Student Views

I chose English Language as I wanted to learn more about how language is used in everyday life – it is often overlooked. The teaching in my department is excellent – I especially enjoy my children’s language and communication and forensic linguistics modules. Cardiff has a great reputation, is not too expensive and there’s a fantastic social life.

Dave is originally from Brighton and when not studying can be found on the football field playing in Cardiff’s inter departmental football league
