Archaeology and Medieval History is an integrated single honours degree programme which has been established to take full advantage of the wide range of subjects offered by the School of History and Archaeology. The course has been arranged so that you can combine the study of two different areas with a single, coherent programme. Students who take this programme choose modules which are designed to give parallel historical and archaeological perspectives of particular periods and civilisations.

Students taking Archaeology and Medieval History have the chance to study the history of medieval Europe and its neighbours from the point of view of both the written and the archaeological record. By combining complementary courses, students are able to gain a deeper knowledge of the medieval period. For instance, depending on courses available in any one session, students might study the early history of the Vikings from the archaeological evidence and the history of their successors, the Normans, from the written evidence; or the history of the crusader states in the twelfth century from both the archaeological and written records. The degree programme aims to foster a disciplined and critical understanding of the period between the end of the Roman Empire in the West and the fifteenth century.

In the second and third year, students are required to take the core modules Archaeological Excavation 1 and 2 and can then choose from the broad range of courses offered by the two disciplines. The Medieval History modules include The Normans in Europe c. 900-1150, Heresy and Dissent 1000-1450, and William the Conqueror. The Optional Archaeology modules include Viking-age Scandinavia, The Archaeology of Crusader Palestine, Celtic Britain and Ireland and Conservation in Field Archaeology.

Student Views

I studied Archaeology at A-Level and thought I would find the course interesting. The facilities in the department are really good with functional labs and an abundance of computer facilities. The other students on the course are friendly, and I have met lots of people through my involvement in the scuba diving society.
