Criminology (BSc)
UCAS Code:
- L370 BSc/CR
3 years (Full-time) / n/a (Part-time) / n/a (Distance / E-Learning)
The Criminology degree offers students a broad introduction to criminology leading to progressively greater specialisation. The degree, which is run by nationally and internationally renowned Criminological researchers, has been designed to promote both disciplinary specific knowledge and transferable skills.
The introductory modules taken in Year 1 focus on encouraging critical thought about the concept of crime, explanations of crime and strategies of crime control. In addition, a strong emphasis on research methods introduces students to the range of social research methods available and the different ways in which knowledge about social problems such as criminal behaviour can be gathered. In years two and three, these core ideas are developed through specialised modules and more interactive styles of learning. In addition, students can work on a dissertation in their final year.
The degree thus enables students to build up a range of skills and knowledge whilst simultaneously developing a critical appreciation of the processes of criminological research, criminological debates and the operation of the criminal justice system.
