Prospective Students
English Language and Communication (BA)
UCAS Code:
- QP39 BA/LC
3 years (Full-time) / Options available please contact the Admissions Tutor. (Part-time) / n/a (Distance / E-Learning)
This course shares many modules with the BA in Communication offered by the School, but emphasises the study of language as the primary means of human communication and the social and political issues in which language is centrally involved.
The main aims of this degree programme are to promote critical awareness of language, both as a symbolic system and as a means of communication in different cultural settings, to explore variation in the use of language and other communication codes in social situations and to assess the implications of how language is used communicatively by individuals, specific social groups and communities and in specific social institutions.
During the first year students take compulsory foundation modules in both Communication and in Language. These modules, together with the core modules in the second year introduce students to ways of studying human language. No previous knowledge of linguistics or linguistic terminology are assumed. The modules also examine how languages are organised, how they vary and change and how we exchange meanings on an everyday basis. In addition to the two core first-year subjects, students also choose a third subject which can either be from within the School or from another Humanities School.
In the second and third years you are able to build on this foundation by choosing to study a range of particular communication situations and functions in which language and linguistic skills are particularly relevant. These include in children's development, in multilingual settings, in the workplace, in teaching, in the analysis and treatment of communication disorders, in forensic science or in literary criticism.
