Law and French (LLB)

UCAS Code:

  • RM11 LLB/LF

4 years (Full-time) / n/a (Part-time) / n/a (Distance / E-Learning)

The aim of the Law and French degree programme at Cardiff is to produce lawyers who are not only skilled in the law of England and Wales, but who are also fluent in the French language and conversant with the society, political institutions and legal system of France.

This degree programme combines the study of English law with the study of the language, institutions and culture of France. The scheme is an excellent preparation for work in an increasingly important international context, whether in industry, commerce, diplomacy, legal practice or the academic world.
In year one, you take four modules in English law and others relating to French language and culture. This is followed in year two by an introduction to the French legal system along with advanced courses in the French language and a range of modules offered by Cardiff Law School and the School of European Studies. You spend your third year studying law at a French University and increasing your level of proficiency in the French language. Current destinations are Nantes, Rennes, Amiens, Poitiers or Toulouse. In the final year, you return to Cardiff to further your development of linguistic and legal skills.

The Cardiff Law and Language degree programmes meet the requirements of the governing bodies of the solicitors and barristers branches of the legal profession.  Our students may include the foundation subjects in their studies and obtain exemption from the academic stage of the professional examinations; but it is normally possible for them to supplement this by at least one optional legal subject, in addition to their French studies.  Cardiff Law School also offers the Legal Practice Course and Bar Professional Training Course for students who wish to qualify as barristers or solicitors, so you will not need to go elsewhere to complete your legal education.

Student Views

I chose Law and French with the intention of becoming a barrister, and felt the French element would enhance my job prospects. Out of the 6 universities I looked at, Cardiff was by a long way the most friendly and welcoming. I really enjoy the French part of my course and look forward to spending my 3rd year abroad – hopefully somewhere hot! The teaching is good, especially tutorials – which give you a chance to explore the subject in depth.

Tom also plays for the Law football team and is a member of the Law Society with whom he has just been to Dublin
