The aim of the Law and German degree programme at Cardiff is to produce lawyers who are not only skilled in the law of England and Wales, but who are also fluent in the German language and conversant with German society and political institutions and the legal system of Germany or Austria.

This degree programme combines the study of English law with the study of the language, institutions and culture of Germany. The programme is an excellent preparation for work in an increasingly important international context, whether in industry, commerce, diplomacy, or legal practice or the academic world.

In year one, you take four modules in English law and four others relating to German language and culture. This is followed in year two by an introduction to the German constitution, along with advanced courses in the German language and a range of modules offered by Cardiff Law School and the School of European Studies. You spend your third year studying law at a German or Austrian University and increasing your level of proficiency in the German language. Current destinations are Passau, Halle or Konstanz in Germany and Innsbruck in Austria. In the final year, you return to Cardiff to further your development of linguistic and legal skills.

The Cardiff Law and Language degree programmes meet the requirements of the governing bodies of the solicitors and barristers branches of the legal profession. Our students may include the foundation subjects in their studies and obtain exemption from the academic stage of the professional examinations; but it is normally possible for them to supplement this by at least one optional legal subject, in addition to their German studies. Cardiff Law School also offers the Legal Practice Course and Bar Professional Training Course for students who wish to qualify as barristers or solicitors, so you will not need to go elsewhere to complete your legal education.
