Prospective Students

Law and Sociology (LLB)

UCAS Code:

  • ML13 LLB/LS

3 years (Full-time) / n/a (Part-time) / n/a (Distance / E-Learning)

The Law and Sociology LLB degree programme is designed to equip you with an understanding of core areas of law and the legal system, as well as to develop your understanding of, and interest in, contemporary sociological theories, research methods and debates.

The Law and Sociology LLB reflects the centrality of law in its social and political context. The two subjects are intended to complement each other, providing a stimulating cross-referencing of ideas and methods.

In Year one you take four modules in Law and two modules relating to Sociology. In Years two and three, you take between 60 and 80 credits in Law and 40 and 60 credits in Sociology. Examples of law modules include Family Law, Sociology of Law, Medicine, Ethics and Law, Constitutionalism and Human Rights in Central Europe, and Public International Law. Emphasis is placed on comparative perspectives in Sociology and there are a number of opportunities to study aspects of societies other than Britain.

The Cardiff Law and Sociology degree meets the requirements of the governing bodies of the solicitors and barristers branches of the legal profession so that LLB graduates may obtain exemption from the academic stage of the professional examinations. Cardiff Law School also offers the Legal Practice Course and Bar Professional Training Course for students who wish to qualify as barristers or solicitors, so you will not need to go elsewhere to complete your legal education.
