Prospective Students

Astrophysics (MPhys)

UCAS Code:

  • F510 MPhys/P

4 years (Full-time) / n/a (Part-time) / n/a (Distance / E-Learning)

If you are interested in fundamental questions about our Universe then this course may well suit you. In Cardiff you will study alongside scientists working at the forefront of astronomical research, and are likely to hear quickly about the latest astronomical discoveries, while at the same time you will be learning basic scientific skills.

This MPhys degree is designed for those students who already know that they want to study astrophysics in more depth than is possible in the three year programme. It will give you a broad physics education and a thorough grounding in mathematics and physics, subjects that are increasingly important in a technological society.

The course structure is very flexible. All Cardiff Physics and Astronomy degree programmes share a common first year. The range of modules available in the first year is designed to stimulate your interest in Physics whilst giving you a sound foundation upon which to build in later years. Modules include Atoms, Nuclei and Matter, Cosmos, Astrophysical Concepts, How the Human Body Works and Computing on the Net. At the end of the first year, you have to decide whether you want to continue with your original degree choice or choose another of Cardiff's physics and astronomy degrees.

In the second and third years you will take a selection of advanced modules that allow you to practise and consolidate new skills by applying them to a wide range of astrophysical problems. In the final year, you will concentrate specifically on astrophysics, spending half your time completing taught modules and half working on a major astrophysics project in conjunction with one of the School's research groups.

Student Views

“I chose Cardiff as I have lived near here all my life and love the area. It has parks, beaches and even mountains nearby, as well as great shops and plenty of things to do. As for the University it is right in the centre of the capital and has a good reputation. I decided to undertake a PhD as I really enjoyed the glimpse of research that my fourth year project from my undergraduate degree gave me. After my PhD I would like to carry on with research and undertake post-doctoral research and teaching.”
Haley Morgan (MPhys in Astrophysics)
